What's the "Nwe Posts" number under my avatar?

In the avatar that constantly displays on the left of the page, there's a "New Posts" with a number that seems to change randomly. Currently mine says 73. Before I clicked here to make a new thread, it said 70.
Earlier today, it said 38, then 120.
Is it giving me lotto numbers?

damn you've cracked the code for this weeks lotto

mine says 3 at the moment, it should be calculating the amount of posts that have been made that you haven't read.
now the way it works out if youve read/seen or not could be alot of different ways.

if you click the new post button/link it should take you to the 3 posts (in my case) that i havent read since my last visit.

other than that ive not no clue, but will take a closer eye at it from now on.

hmm mine just jumped to 7. odd and im confused.
now it does probably update once every 10mins or so or at a certain interval, but the numbers still seem odd.

come to think of it, i am now thinking it jumps alot because of the rss feeds forum

as posts are being made their alot it is easy for it to jump high. then once youve clicked new posts or once the system assumes you have 'visited' it clears back to zero, then counts any new ones etc etc.

Well i was on 18 when I went to the home page, then clicked the link for this thread and it jumped to 20.
Not fussed about it, just wondered what it was all about.

well thats what i though, i took them away once and then i got a few complaints, so they came back.
sometimes i cruise in there to check the headlines for the news.
