It's all about momentum, mate. The fancy stuff happens when the
opposition haven't had time to close any holes in their line. Gasnier
showed a bit of this with half a gap to work with, twice. Thurston
kicked behind the line when NSW rushed up (and to be fair, this was
about the only time Queensland looked dangerous, and even then only
barely avoided butchering the try).
Momentum, ideally, is given an equal chance of being developed by both
sides, and in the hands of a competent ref, this happens. When one
side is being held back 12m and the other 9, when one team is given
free reign to hold down in the ruck (Danny Buderus would have earned
10 grand as a prostitute tonight), sadly this doesn't happen. Since
all the blues had to do was keep on keeping on, why would you expect
the game to be any different?
Meanwhile, the bunch of disinterested ****s inpersonating Qld players
seemed to lack anything else in the way of ideas. I held back
criticising KHunt's move to a totally new position for the game but by
**** was that a dismal failure. The backs looked totally disjointed,
simple second-man plays were a joke and the try before half-time was
the only time they applied the right tactic to the NSW defence. When
the blues rushed up, we obliged by throwing long, slow passes to a
stationary target who got smashed. When they held back, we passed way
short of the line and presented an easy, isolated target. Really,
really poor, and all the Cowboys brought their club form with them.
Hunt to fullback, Prince to halfback, Bowen to the bench if he's fit,
Inglis to 5/8 if Lockyer isn't. **** Webb off. PJ Marsh didn't do
anything wrong but didn't do anything, either. Did Harrison get on the
field? And for ****'s sake, if NSW lie all over them in the ruck in
game 2, get the dummy half to at least start shoving them - even if
only pantomime style it might make the refotang realise he has a
whistle in his hand, and it isn't the one with clockweights dangling
beneath. I was always against the Manly Toovey-era arm-waving at the
ref but **** me drunk if it isn't called for when the **** is a
nuffie. How many times did he **** up calls about dropped ball in
tackles? How many were in favour of NSW? About 4-1? Just shithouse.
Then again, it's hard to be too upset about the ref - Qld beat
themselves without much need for help with disjointed and
disinterested attack and an absolute capitulation in the intensity
stakes.
All the hand-wringing about the chicken wing guru came to bugger all,
didn't it?
My brother suggested playing a game at Dairy Farmers. I would love to
see it. The blues love coming to Suncorp, we'd get the ****s right out
of their comfort zone up in Townsville though. An extra flight to get
there, a truly parochial crowd baying for blood. There would be less
than 10 blue jumpers in the whole bloody place. And they could forget
a friendly camp at the Gold Coast, it would be bum**** nowhere. I
reckon Dairy Farmers loses about 24,000 seats to Suncorp - so the QRL
would lose a lot of bums-on-seats revenue. I reckon you'd sell the
place out charging 100 bucks for cheap seats though, so they could
make up the difference that way if the locals would be in it. I know
one thing for sure - 28000 at Dairy Farmers would be a lot more
atmosphere than 67000 at ANZ. Maybe once every four years?

Were you there? No you were probably giving hairy back a doggy ****
while watching your ****s get beat. Don't comment on atmosphere at a
venue unless you were there and please don't tell us how good a ****
hairy back is.

Overrated overhyped shite played by a bunch of no names Look at all the
empty seats. Gallop's response "If youse Sydney locals don't turn up to
watch this crap we'll take it away from you" ... oooh really scary. Nah no
great loss really. And pleeeease - why such a big event on a Weds night?
Only to inflate TV ratings as no competition on the box mid week. Stuff the
fans.

I agree. Haven't watched an SOO game for years.

Need some rule changes. No more than 2 tacklers, only one marker, a much
quicker play-the-ball, that's just a start. There's something wrong with
the game if the only players worth watching can't get room to move.
That's being reflected in the tv ratings and the attendances. Although I
can't see why anyone would be bothered paying 80 bucks for a ticket and
then getting ripped off at the bar and the food counter when you can make
nachos at home in 10 minutes and get a six pack of Tooheys Old for $12,
and you can listen to it on the radio and watch it on the box if you
want.
I was thinking of going down to Bruce next Friday for the Raiders-Eagles
game, but **** it, I'll stay home. I won't get frostbite, I won't get
ripped off for a beer (although like most civilised places they sell it
in cans at Bruce too).

Mal has been brain dead his whole life, that's why he was such a good

You are already seeing twice as many tries scored on average as 20
years ago. I think the problem is that you can make a guaranteed 50
metres just by carting it up, and another 50 metres on the kick.
Passing the ball risks errors. So coaches instruct teams to just cart
it up and then kick on the last.
I have never liked the 10 metre rule. Go back to five and police it.
Only trouble is, you'll go back to 30 penalties per game, and the
powers that be don't like scrums and penalties either.
The trouble with the old five metre rule was not that five metres was
too short, but that teams flaunted it with impunity, especially out
wide (umbrella defence best exploited by Warren Ryan coached teams),
and refs tended to extend the five to eight or ten anyway.
Rugby is doing OK and it has a 0 metre rule.

Wholeheartedly agree, fish. Warren Ryan has said it many times too,
and it's eminently sensible. One end result of the 10m rule is that
you get this cart-it-up crap and wait for a repeat set, which is very
often rewarded with a try. No creativity because it's mostly obsolete
- just get tall wingers and if you can cart the ball to within 30m or
so you might score off a cross-field kick or bomb. Ho Hum. Absolute
pity Benji Marshall is made of glass because he's one of the few to
just play old-fashioned attacking footy and have a go.
Another result is this crap we have at the moment with stifling the
ruck. Send in four or five blokes to each tackle and you'll always
have time to get your line set. Give the bloke with the ball a little
cuddle while you're there, for good measure. With that sort of time on
your hands, you can send up sprinters to cut off any attempt to move
the ball sideways, just like last night. This is all tedious to the
point of tears.
For mine, the pandering by referees to cheating players and coaches is
disgusting. The almighty buck demands free-flowing games, but you
don't get them by failing to penalise negative play. Scrummaging skill
was in decline for a long time, but utterly abandoning the fair scrum
has done **** all to improve the game.
I could be completely wrong, but I'd love to see a preseason comp
where the actual rules are actually enforced, to see if it's a better
or worse "product" (another term I hate aplpied to league).
