I Guess That's Why They Call It Ausfailure
Well, it's over and despite the brash Anthony Mundine like bragging
that the Aussies were full of in 2005 their Olympic dream has ended in
a total and complete nightmare.
In 2005 they predicted 20 gold medals and failed.
In 2005 they predicted a top 5 finish, and failed.
In 2005 they thought they would get more golds and Great Britain, and
failed.
In 2005 they said this:
<Quote Mundinism>
Australia is on track for another top five finish at the 2008 Beijing
Olympics based on the results posted in Olympic sports during 2005.
Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) chief John Coates said Australia
probably would finish the year in fourth place if there was a medal
table based on Olympic sports in 2005.
He said results from world championships, world cups and other
benchmark events in the Games' sports indicated a haul of 20 gold, 13
silver and 15 bronze medals for Australia, "putting us amongst sport's
superpowers".
"At this stage of the year we are third but we are heading for a
fourth placed finish (in 2005)," Coates told AAP
"The US will be top, then Russia and China with Australia just ahead
of Germany.
"If we can maintain these sorts of results we are on target for a top
five finish in Beijing.
"We might have lost the Ashes and our rugby team has dropped back but
all credit to our Olympic sports organisations and their athletes and
coaches because they are still right up there."
Australia finished fourth on the medal table at the Sydney 2000 Games
with 16 gold medals and 58 in total and maintained that position at
the Athens 2004 Games with 17 gold and 49 medals in total.
Coates, who is due to report the benchmark results to a meeting of
Australia's sports ministers in Hobart on Friday, said history showed
medal performances declined in a post Olympic year, but this was not
the case for Australia in 2005.
"We are having a better post Olympic year then after Sydney," he said
of the benchmark results in 2001 that showed a fall to 40 medals.
"We are not on the wane by any means."
<End Mundinism>
While the entire world ignored this typically brash and completely
untrue boast in 2005 Bluey Crackersport did include it on his
marvelous website with the following footnote:
<Quote the great Bluey Crackersport>
Desperate to enhance the image of Ausfailure as a nation of losers the
Australian Olympic Committee has announced it has won 20 gold medals
at the 2008 Olympics.
No Ashes, beaten by the Kiwis in Sydney for the first time since 1959,
no Bledisloe Cup, no golf majors, tennis brat Lleyton Hewitt still
can't win that damned Australian Open.
It doesn't sound like a great year for Aussie sports fans but, wait,
relief is at hand - they got on the podium in the virtual Olympics.
The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) has trumpeted a mythical
48-medal haul, including 20 golds.
If only the Olympics were held this week and not in Beijing in 2008!
<End Bluey's magnificent piece of journalism>
Each of Ausfailure's miserly number of gold medals cost the Aussie
taxpayer $16 million dollars.
Well done cobbers.
No really.

Sports and Recreation Minister Clayton Cosgrove says New Zealand's success
at the Beijing Games proves the government's high-performance strategy is
working. It was implemented two years ago and has seen $60 million invested
in Olympic sports since the Athens games.
So, NZS$20m for each of NZ 3 gold medals?
Well done. No really.

Well they do have the world's best female shot-putter who won gold at
Beijing. She's also a bit of a pin-up girl as she is apparently a lot
smaller and better looking than the average Kiwi sheila.
