Thanks TRG: - what better introduction?
You have obviously recalled my post stating that Freo would perform
without Pavlich dragging them down!
The post that also commented that good winning teams had more than one
goal kicker, the latter of course limiting the team's ability to
deliver scores .... and what was it? 16 goal scorer's or was it only
15 against the other harbour team?
The youngsters had a ball (initially, no pun intended - until I reread
this), supporting each other and not having to worry about feeding an
"A List" player - Connolly's assessment.
Connolly has a lot to answer for! Pav probably has a case to sue for
ruination of his career. He could have been much better under an
experienced coach; and captain of a premiership side. Unfortunately,
it is highly unlikely he will lead a a team to premiership while he
stays at Freo.
But wasn't the "new Freo" a treat to watch on the weekend?
They left me with a feeling that the Eagles would have a long term
local competitor ... providing they trade Pav (who will perform better
with a new club. He is stale and suffocated / suffocating in his
current environment - it's a two way thing; expectations vs
performance).
Freo are cleaning the decks; admittedly a bit late to take advantage
of what was a great list
... Connolly gone
..... Schwab going, going, gone (a la Nellie Melba)
.... and maybe a couple of others to go ...
to enable the club to achieve the greatness that the onfield
representatives have hinted at!
And the (long suffering) fans / supporters deserve.
Next week the Weagles (as you term them) may have a competitor on the
paddock .
Unless of course, the Dockers bring Pav back ......
Then the Freo wobble will come back when the excitement of last
weekend is smothered as creative young players are again forced to
feed Postman Pav......
And the WCE will win convincingly ;)
Gee .. last weekend was great
The WC youngsters did the same as those from Freo
Freed from comparison with Cousins / Kerr / Glass etc and with COX as
an inspirational onfield leader, they defeated a team which had top 8
aspirations. Were not also the Big Q and Staker a treat to watch?
Overall gave one goose bumps to see things coming together. Long time
since Whoosher smiled so easily. He knew what he had, but also knew
the players / team needed (and still needs) time.
It will be a while before we (WC) see the consistency needed for
another premeiership, but it is there!
When the youngsters get over the (need for) "hero worship" and "awe"
of the big names, and the WC big names work with the young players
..... WoW! move over Geelong ;-) (and bye bye Carlton - don't get too
used to the limelight Neil ;)
And with Freo emulating WC, we will be back to seeing the Melbourne
pretenders as the craven money beggars they have (with a couple of
exceptions) become. And hopefully, there will be a change to a (true)
AFL (ie not VFL blinkered) with some visionary and hard nosed
administrators closing down a couple of leeches. Given time, fans
will move; some "diehard supporters" will be lost, but others will
replace them .. and they will have a better competition to watch.
Interestingly, a couple of WA players who performed last weekend
(McManus and Braun) were those coming to the end of their careers ..
and whose clubs are trying to "kill them off". On one side, one can't
argue with this; on the other, both clubs are showing limited
imagination in their use of a player who has proven to be "hard at the
ball" and inspirational within the team.
Again, many thanks TRG for your astute observations

And for supporting my comments / opinions
I don't feel so isolated any more.
You've made my day <grin>
