Fuel efficiency and cost: diesel vs petrol

Slightly off-topic, but there has been a fair bit of discussion in this ng
about engine efficiency.

The current Economist magazine has an interesting article on the costs and
technology of diesel vs petrol. Told me a couple of things I didn't know:

The Oil companies are 5 years ahead of you mate.

When they caught onto the fact that people(especially in Europe) were
starting to release bulk amounts of Diesel cars because of the higher
mileage per litre of fuel, they jacked the price up.

I remember when Diesel used to cost about 20% less then petrol. Now diesel
is about 10%-20% more per litre if not more.

What we really need here in Australia is to do what Brazil did and mandate
high Ethanol compatible vehicles with E85 compatibility. You will then see
the oil monopoly having to compete in a market economy, rather then the
organised oil pricing scam they have going.

Alternative fuel should have been planned long ago which would have
reined in the Arabic greed.
