Grocery prices website - ALDI Cheapest by far.

It is easy to see one reason why the media has canned the grocery prices
website.
It may be a bit lacking in details and some criticism may be legitimate, but
the clear message is the ALDI is far cheaper than Coles or Woolworths all
across Australia on the basket of basic staples.

By far cheaper I mean around $60 for the basket of staples compared to $75
to $80 for Coles and Woolworths. Any area of the land where ALDI operates
the story is the same.

==============================================
Not only that but for the past five years I have spent several months each
year touring Europe in a camper van. Food prices in Europe are generally FAR
CHEAPER THAN AUSTRALIA.
Here are a few examples.
Cora, (French supermarket chain) Dole Route Nationale 73 France 31/5/2008
Dish Washing Detergent 500G E1.59
Sunflower oil 1L E1.35
Pate de campagne 300G E0.90
Nectarines Kg E0.87
Baguettes 250G E 0.53

Netto (French Supermarket similar to ALDI) Foucherans France 30/5/2008
Dried Basil 15G E0.42
Olives stuffed anchovies 300G E0.74
Haricot beans can 400G E 0.39
Beer St Wendeler 330ml E0.24
Tomatoes round Kg E1.39
Bananas Kg E1.15

ALDI Audincourt France 17/5/2008
Yogurt 1kg (8x125G packs) E1.19
Beer 330ml E0.24
Cheese Munster 200g E1.39
Cheese Grand Padano 100G E0.99
Wine le Herault (French red) E0.79
Wine Bergerac (French red) E1.19
German Mustard 300G E0.34

These are just a few examples from some dockets I still have. The prices are
in Euro, but when adjusted for the exchange rate many things are far cheaper
in France, Germany, Austria Belgium Spain than Australia. Fish is cheaper
than Australia, only some red meats are consistently as dear or dearer and
the overall cost of food is cheaper.

The reason is that there are many more competing supermarkets. There are
four ALDI type shops, LIDL, Penny Mart, Netto and ALDI, as well as numerous
full service supermarkets, Carrefour, E.Leclerc, Geant Casino, Champion,
Intermarche all in competition.

We have no real competition here in Australia. Even ALDI does not have to
really try hard. Although ALDI sells a lot of Australian products, but many
of the imported items you see in ALDI are on sale in ALDI shops in Germany
and France far far cheaper than the same thing here. The differences are too
great to be accounted for by transport costs.

The 80%+ market domination of Woolworths and coles, combined with their
petrol discount docket system is highly anti competitive in both the grocery
and fuel markets. If Woolworths want to sell discount petrol fine, but make
them offer it to the buyer WITHOUT THE DISCOUNT DOCKETS. This "discount"
system has ruined independent fuel retailers and perpetuates the market
domination of Woolworths.

If the government were serious about competition policy they would OUTLAW
DISCOUNT DOCKETS WHICH TIE ONE PURCHASE (GROCERIES) to ANOTHER (FUEL).

I agree 100%

Since the introduction of these fuel docket bullshit, prices have increased
signficantly at supermarkets and whats more Woolies bought out all their
competitors which didn't have the fuel deals.

Unfortunately there are still stupid people out there who think they are
actually getting a good deal because they are getting 4 cents discount at
the bowser, when the reality is they were just arse raped at the grocery
checkout.

This fuel discount scam should have been shut down long ago, but
unfortunately the man on the job(Howard) has been snoozing for 11 years, and
now morons will probably go apeshit if they get their precious 4 cent
vouchers taken away.

You can fool all of the sheeple all of the time.
They will get angry with you if you tell them Santa Claus
does not live at the North Pole or bring them free gifts.

For many, sociopathic old non-core John was their Santa Claus,

Wait til it becomes like the UK - they (Tesco I believe, and perhaps
other big shop chains) grab a monopoly on fuel and when you go to fill
up it's a shitfight because everyone parks at the garage to shop and
come back with their treasured fuel vouchers.
And we in WA are being berated for our "drachonian" shopping
restrictions because a big US warehouse style shopping chain won't set
up here as they are in Melbourne. Ummm, should we vote for extented
shopping hours?

when the banks all collapse we will be lucky to afford a bowl of rice

"whopper" bank is going to "go under".IMF chief economist warned.

US bank 'to fail within months'
Wall St
A "whopper" bank is going to "go under". Mr Rogoff said

The global financial crisis is set to get worse, with a large US bank
likely to collapse in the next few months, a former IMF chief
economist has warned.

Kenneth Rogoff's comments came as shares in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac
sank on a report that the home lenders would, in effect, be
nationalised.

Despite hopes that the US economy had turned the corner, Mr Rogoff
claimed it was "not out of the woods".

"I would even go further to say 'the worst is to come'," he said.

"We're not just going to see mid-sized banks go under in the next few
months," said Mr Rogoff, who held the IMF role between 2001 and 2004.

"We're going to see a whopper, we're going to see a big one, one of
the big investment banks or big banks."

We have to see more consolidation in the financial sector before this
is over
Kenneth Rogoff

Speaking at a conference in Singapore, Mr Rogoff, now an economics
professor at Harvard, forecast that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac would
"probably" not exist in their present form in a few years.

"We have to see more consolidation in the financial sector before this
is over."

On Monday, shares of Fannie Mae fell more than 22%, or $1.76, to close
at $6.15. Shares of Freddie Mac fell almost 25%, or $1.46, to $4.39.

No, you should avoid extended shopping hours. It kills the local general
store
and eventually impacts on many people who are then expected in service
industries to work increasingly on weekends.

There's an "Aldi" opening up about 2 klicks from me in opposition to two
Bi lo's (Coles) and a Woolworths re-opening when their new building is
completed construction.

Reminds me of what Harrison's character said in the movie "Mosquitoe Coast"

It's time for Rudd to take action or get out of the way.

Since it began years ago, who or which party would get rid of it?
