Canon 450D question
I have decided to bite the bullet and will finally be upgrading from my
current P&S to something a little better, I have decided to go with the
Canon 450D after much research and hands on at some of the local vendors
with it and a few of the Nikons the choice eventually came down to
ergonomics, the Canon fit my hand better and everything was much more
accessible for me. I will be spending part of my Tax refund on this so I
will have a couple of weeks before the money is in the bank but I will be
buying a body plus lens kit. The Camera will come with a 18-55 IS lens but I
want something a little longer. I will also be going to Perth in November
for the Red Bull Air race, what do the experts here recommend for that type
of shooting. I probably won't buy the lens outright just yet but will look
at renting it for the occasion, so can you please recommend somewhere in
Perth that will rent me such a lens as well.
Thanks :-)

I've never shot aircraft, but have often seen 400mm primes or the
100-400L IS used. I'd go with the 100-400 for flexibility and
image stabilising in pan mode, plus I have it WIll take a
little getting used to - it's zoom is not a dial type one, it's
a push-pull zoom.

Congrats AC on your decision. Last year when I was at the Air Show at
the CNE I seen a guy with a dream lens:
http://www.the-digital-picture.com/R...ns-Review.aspx
Now you're looking at big bucks here, but it is a lot of people's
dream lens, and I've heard it's worth the wait to save up for.
A great idea to rent this big glass.
Good luck!

Or is this another of your "non-uses of children"
to promote canon gear you scam?

Well done! A guy at dA with a 450D has some of the best b&w
photography I've ever seen in a dslr.
Hope it really works for you.

I doubt anyone here is an expert in aircraft race photography.
But at a guess from bike and car racing photography, which
I've done: I'd say you should get a medium aperture lens
(no need for wide open one: you're shooting mostly at very brightly
lit subjects against the sky), fast focus or even manual focus - most
of your shots will be from 100m away at least if not a lot more, you
don't need AF for that! Just fix the focus and concentrate on getting
the framing right. It's really hard with fast moving subjects.
Don't even bother with IS: it's for shaky hands, not fast subjects.
Get a monopod instead: they are not expensive, are light and
easy to carry and you'll never regret it.

Sorry, can't help here. Last time I was in Perth
was in the 80s, anything I said would be grossly out of date!

I grabbed these with the 28-135 kit lens on the 40d

http://www.pbase.com/temuchin/image/101622730/large
From the photos I have seen taken by friends with the 450d it is a
great camera.
This woman wins a heap of photocomps with her 450d shots

What a pity you enjoy talking through your ass so much Brooksie.
Canon 28 -135 lens is *not* a kit lens. Never has been, never will be.
*KIT* lenses refer to any one of three lenses Canon supply in a reduced
price (as compared to buying separately) *Kit*. All Prefixed with EF
"S". The lens you claim to have used is a FF lens.
If you're getting paid to show you ignorance, you certainly are earning
your money.
