The bullshit that you have to go through to get a newsgroup started makes it not
worth the effort. As for a moderated one, well who's gonna volunteer to be the
moderator? His job is to receive all posts as emails, then he has to approve
each one for delivery to the newsgroup.

It seems that more and more NGs are starting to lose their flavor of the month
status. Web based forums, which I detest but grudgingly use because increasingly
there is less and less choice, seem to be taking over.

I like Usenet because I can copy the data files that Agent uses onto a
thumbdrive and use it on different PCs. I can download all new messages, then
breeze through them all without waiting for advert and graphic laden web pages
to download, then to go through a bullshit system of searching to find posts
that are replies to your own, or are based on specific subjects, etc.

Then there's the forum police who, if you offend their sensibilities, like to
have their power trips and cancel your posts, often with no comeback, no appeal
or whatever. With Usenet there is none of that. But it has the problem of
spammers. But they can be dealt with using programs such as Newsproxy or the
filter system that your client may have. You start with cancelling anything from
Google Groups, xposts to more than two newsgroups and anything with html in it.

That filters most of the rubbish.

How right you are about so-called Forum Police, Self appointed consultants
of cronyism, would be a good description. There's quite a few groups /
forums like that, where you have to watch every word you attempt to put into
print , just in case you upset an Administrator // moderator // sponsor, or
anyone else who has been there just a bit longer then you have or has XYZ
number of posts up on there post counter, they think there God, and while
they can openly insult people, You try it and your simply removed from the
mailing list, or as one group that I used to support does, put you on the
moderated list, where every word to attempt to offer, is read by one of the
Forum police first, IF he thinks it will destroy his little world, or cause
a 3rd world war, it simply doesn't see the light of day. Then to add
insult to injury they also remove your "private message" rites , So you
can't complain, or communicate with your fellow forum suffers.
One such forum is http://www.stereo.net.au/forums/index.php or SNA which
has turned there brand of cronyism
into an art form. This little group of narrow minded ****-wits is run by a
bumbling fool, by the name of KEITH-W
who not only supports his sponsors, who can do no wrong , but also supports
his click of long standing members, and anyone new attempting to offer any
sort of different opinion is quickly cast out. In fact even prominent audio
engineers and manufactures are not encouraged to participate, unless there
prepared to "shell out" Sponsorship dollars, and there-by joining the
cronyism club.

And frankly our all knowing friend who thinks a moderated group would do
well, would do well to join some of these forums to find out just how the
real internet forum world really operates.
