I have a pioneer dvd player, but when i put in a dvd, the unit doesnt even start spinning... (works
just fine for anything else).

My o/s is win98se,, and even tho' it is old, I do remember that we played the Matrix (movie) on it
about 4 years ago, and I havent used the dvd player since (to play a dvd that is.).

Checked as many areas as possible regarding settings and similar, (except the bios, but dont think
it would be something in there) also checked windows Help,, of which has no value at all.
Can anyone shed some light plz......

Just for kicks, try downloading 'DVD Decrypter'.

Insert the DVD and then open DVD Decrypter, what does it say?
