another question on tyres

Another set required
thinking of changing from the rather orphan size of 225/50/17 to
235/45/17

The latter offer more choices and also about $100 a corner cheaper .
as long as load and speed rating v94 maintained any comments ?

The 235/45 is approx 6.5mm smaller in rolling radius than the 225/50
which mat affect your speedo accuracy but other than that no problem.

That's an extra 10.17 wheel revolutions per km by my calcs. Probably
end up doing 98km/h when it reads 100 (factory-issued speedo error
aside).

If your calcs are correct then the difference isn't a big issue, the
speedo is probably out by more than 2kph anyway.
I'd fit the different size and use a GPS to test the speedo accuracy.

The one "Orphan" size I remember well was on I think a Ford LTD with a 390mm
instead of a 15" You could only get Michelin in that size and they were $360
each compared with $100 for a Kelly in the 15". A lot of our customers were
advised to buy some good looking mag wheels and swap sizes, if you kept the
car long enough to need a second set you made all your money back in
savings, not to mention what happens if you needed a replacement in
Birdsville or somewhere even more remote.
A while ago now but memorable.

Ditto some models of Jag. Fortunately, in both cases, the stud pattern
was still a common standard one for which imperial diameter rims were
available.

That metric tyre size was peculiar to the XE LTD (cant remember the correct
"F" code) and what a **** of an idea. Renault Fuegos pulled the same
arsehole-trick. Go figure !?
