Glad I'm not paying for the tyres on this

Passed this out near Bathurst. Never seen a triple-tyred wheel before.

probably because he has to drive across ploughed paddocks with a load of
fertilizer all the time, though I have never seen triples before either.

Less load on each tyre means less wear.

I've never seen a setup like that either, usually if they need to carry
extra load they install another axle.

until he has to turn a corner and the inside and outside tyre is dragged
around,
the purpose of that setup is to spread the weight of the vehicle over more
ground, it is after all a fertilizer spreader and has to drive over some
seriously chopped up dirt :-)

Axle limits are what determines the maximum load -- fitting extra
tyres won't increase the legal load limit of the truck.

My guess is he's after more flotation for soft surfaces (ie tyre
pressures need to be lower than usual).

AC could be on the money but it'd be interesting to know what the bin
is for. Looks a little bit like it could be a grouper (used for
transferring fertilizer and seed to airseeders) except that the
essential unloading auger is missing.

What type of fertilizer (other than shit) is spread on the surface?

Nitrogenous fertilizers are typically banded (applied under the soil)
to reduce losses to atmosphere. Phosphorous is normally applied with
the planting seed.

It may well be a manure spreader, in which case Damo's nose would
confirm it!

I've never seen that set-up either, but i sure do want *something*
that does!
i'll have to add that to the list of dream mods for my 120Y V8 project
car, on 13inch rims with standard hubcaps of course! ;-p

There is another one of these that gets around but it only has the
doubles. They call it a "jet patcher". It has a big hose that goes
from the bin, over the cabin and down the front. The driver controls
it and points it at pot holes and shoots out the bitumen/mix/crap to
fill them in. Then the next 50 cars run over it and scatter the shit
everywhere except where it's supposed to be and they come out and do
it again a month later.

But yeah, this one with the triples doesn't look like it has anything
to do with black gooey shit. It looks like it has a very light
coloured mud all over the back.

Whatever it is I think you're right about the idea behind the triples.
Seems to make sense.
