First 4WD station wagon to be marketed in Oz?

Got asked today by someone who thought he knew the answer, which
happened to be the same as mine so it's probably an easy question.

I'd also ask when (and I don't know the exact year)?

Maybe Jeep.
The International Scout was more like a pannel Van.
But then Land Rover made wagons.

Who knows..

The answer is probably something horridly obscure like a 1950's era
Willys.

But for practical purposes I'd reckon it was the Subaru in about 1978

I'd guess a Jeepster of the 1950's or so.

Landcruiser 55 Series?
Or were the BJ45's before them as well?

I would say the 1947 Willeys Jeep Station Wagon.

The Subaru Wagons came out in 1974 (maybe 1975?) in Australia, but you
wouldn't want one even if there were any left. They had a 1400cc wet
sleeve boxer engine that leaked and blew smoke if you looked at it
sideways, and they had really bad rust problems. A school friend of
mine had one in 1982 that was on its last legs, and it would have been
less than eight years old. The later dry sleeve 1600 and 1800 ones
were much better. I think the only people that really got wet sleeve
motors close to right were the French.

Willys Wagoneer was the answer deemed to be correct. They were sold
here, in reasonable numbers, from sometime in the early 1960's.

The Wagoneer replaced a much earlier Jeep station wagon, but they were
never marketed in Oz AFAIK.

There were various other 4WD people transports, but by the definition
I'd use for a station wagon they'd need to be a four door fixed roof
configuration with rear cargo area and tailgate.

I'd also guess that the next to qualify would probably be the Range
Rover (1970).

How about "the 1st RWD vehicle with aerodynamic bodywork, double
wishbone suspension at all corners and a mid-mounted high performance
D.O.H.C. engine that can incidentally carry 7 passengers" marketed in
Oz?

.........a pointless question i know, but the answer is sitting (broken
down!) in my driveway and there HAS to be something exciting about
owning such a sexless vehicle! ;-p
