Can you add to this list?

If our State Governments were really that serious about road safety, they
would.

1. Have flashing lights installed at all school crossings where the speed
limits are reduced. They could be switched on/off by the Lolipop people.
Then if you got booked for speeding, you deserved it.

2. Introduce driving at all high schools as a school course.

3. Introduce first aid as a school course from Gr7 with renewals each year
after.

Agreed, in fact they have them in all school zones in South Australia and
they are turned on and off by the school Principal (or someone who is
designated for the job)

Most of the schools on main roads in the lower hunter area have these
flashing lights above the 40 during school times signs they flash during
the times posted on the signs.

They are solar and auto set to work during school days.

Why not just make it 40 outside schools during daylight hours?
Apparently it only adds around 10 seconds to your drive time if you slow
to 40 through this area

That's good, but in Qld like today it is a pupil free day again.

Because I believe we are inundated with enough bloody signs as it is.
Something as important as saving a life (especially innocent kids) more
needs to be done than it is at present in Qld anyway.

Good idea and I would include basic car maintenance at least enough so
everyone at least knows how to check their tyres, lights, and fluid levels.

Maybe not every year but a least every couple.

Agreed. And this could be extended to allow for situations
like saturday morning sport, when sometimes there are even
more people hanging around the school than on weekdays.

When I was in grade 11 we were given the choice of RI,
Driving skills, and a few other things I can't remember, so
I picked the driving class. Of course it was theory only
(back in those days in Qld you had to be 17 to get your
L's), but that theory was still incredibly useful. My
parents had an auto, and once I got my L's I drove around in
that for a bit. Dad booked a couple of driving school
classes so I could get my manual licence. He told the
driving instructor I could drive, but forgot to mention auto
only. I got in the driving school car, she told me to drive
to a particular servo (about 5km away) which I did. When I
got there I forgot to put the clutch in as I stopped. That
was when the driving instructor found out this was my first
ever time behind a manual. The fact I made it that far
without making a mistake with the clutch or gears I put
squarely on the fact that I did the class a year earlier at
school. Of course there was also theory to do with skid
control, accident avoidance etc. Yes it would sink in better
if it was practical experience, but theory alone is still
valuable IMO.

Not a bad idea.

Other suggestions..
Ditch most traffic fines (including speeding) and issue
penalty points only. But if you accrue 12 points in a _4_
year period, you walk for 6 months. My basis for this is
that without fines there would be no argument that police
are revenue raising. Public perception would then shift that
speed enforcement is about road safety not about lining
govco pockets.

Implement policies to encourage more long-haul freight to be
moved by rail.

Instead of spending gazillions on new motorways in the major
cities, spend the money on improving routes, frequency and
volume capacity of public transport systems. Determine where
and why people travel by car rather than by public
transport, and upgrade public transport accordingly. Make
public transport systems more accessible by building larger
carparks at railway stations.

Increase number of overtaking lanes, and increase amount of
dual-carriageway highway in country areas.

Upgrade many traffic lights to turning lights.

Require a road-rules exam when renewing drivers licences.
Questions should be based on issues that seem to cause
confusion, such as roundabout use, merging when lanes
terminate etc.

Approx every 15 years require a practical driving test for
licence renewal.

Start teaching kids road safety including road rules and signage and how to
ride a bike on the road at a very early age. Introduce a certification
system at junior level.

Extend this into compulsory high school subject in preparation to obtaining
a drivers license.

IMHO - every year - the idea is to have people know first aid, natch -
but they also need the self-confidence to approach a scene and use what
they know and not figure those already there (if there are any at the
time) know what they're doing.
A course every year will do more for that confidence.
There's also new stuff that turns up in terms of how-tos pretty
regularly.

ADD:

Manners.

Yup - common-or-garden manners.
It could be camouflaged as road etiquette so as not to put-down their
****ed-headed parents who don't know, have or have even witnessed a
decent attitude to their fellow creatures
It goes without saying that those ****heads would be the first to object
to their offspring being schooled in the gentler arts of society, so
they need to be sidelined if at all possible.
