$4.5Bn in taxpayer support for 200,000 cars a year

The car companies know how to screw us.

They get $4.5bn in tax support over the next 10 years, that equates to
$17,000 per vehicle that they (might) build in Australia.

I would have thought that the labour market analysts would have said enough,
close down the car companies and solve the labour shortages in other
productive industries - like the $5 an hour milk bars, or the $8 an hour
fast food chains.

Based on Vfacts figures somewhere between 175,000 and 200,000 cars will
be made in Australia this year, taking the lowest number thats 1,750,000
cars in 10yrs which works out at $2571.00 per car which is quite a bit
less than $17,000.

Plus I'm sure no government would be so stupid to pay a figure like that.

In addition to which there's doubtless hope that the subsidy will also
help support the local part makers (such as still exist) who will then
be around to pay tax, provide employment on which employees will pay
tax, and so forth. Not to mention the fact that by staying in business
the manufacturers themselves will be paying taxes that they wouldn't
have paid as pure importers. The gross figures look big, but the net
figures probably work out to be somewhat less.
