just another possibility

will this be just another "doomed to failure" technology
http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=...r-on-the-cheap

"We [have] figured out a way just using a glass of water at room
temperature, under atmospheric pressure," Nocera says. "This thing [a thin
film of cobalt and phosphate on an electrode] just churns away making
[oxygen] from water."

Interesting science but IMO hydrogen is still a long way off being a
common fuel source for cars, in the meantime LPG is the obvious answer,
its cheap and clean and we have lots of it.

agreed, but its nice to see when a new breakthrough pops it's little head
up, the more little breakthroughs we get, the closer we are to one that will
make the whole world go "Well I'll be ****ed!!" :-)

Might be possible. Logically, the only way to split water molecules
using an electric current and doing it effieciently is with some sort
of catalyst. However, when I read this "... by simply adding the
metals cobalt and phosphate ..." I wonder whether it's a science
illiterate writer, a typo or bullshit, since phosphate is NOT a metal.
Then I read "... cobalt and phosphate cost roughly $2.25 an ounce and
$.05 an ounce, respectively" Sorry, that all reads like total bullshit
to me.
