SUV means Sports Utility Vehicle, NOT Sports Ute Vehicle
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/utility
Please, learn some basic English by reading it and stop confusing the
Utility in SUV as a Ute as clearly, we all know it's not. It was a stupid
choice of name for these vehicles as we can clearly see by past confused
comments in here.
I would have thought a more appropriate name for us Aussies would have been
SOR for Soft Off Roader which really is self descriptive.
However, having said that, I loathe the way this country is becoming so
Americanised with the English language. How long before we start seeing
"Trailer Parks" to replace the well know Aussie Caravan Parks. To me and
probably most other Aussies, a trailer is a box trailer or car carrier
trailer.

Not that I'm a supporter of the term "SUV " (or any other wanky Amerikanism
for that matter), but I'm curious as to what word you think "Ute" actually
is a contraction of?

What's wrong with wagon, which is what they are?

Obviously you never looked at the website I posted.
You too, clearly, are also confused with the word Utility in Sports Utility
Vehicle. It does not mean Ute..In this instance, the word Utility refers to
from the website I posted above.
utility (plural utilities)
(economics) The ability of a commodity to satisfy needs or wants.
The state or condition of being useful; usefulness.
Something that is useful.
A service provider, such as an electric company and water company.

No, they are more than just a wagon. Why would you see a similar comparison
between a Holden Commodore wagon and a Toyota Prado? Now do you see the
silliness of your statement. What's wrong with my suggestion? SOR or SOV?

Faaaaaark! Why is everyone so against 'SUV'? It's not even a word as
such, just a ****ing descriptor FFS! What had we been calling them
previously? Off-roaders? 4WD's? There are currently several 'SUV's' on
the market that are neither 4WD or off-roaders, but are still quite
different to car-based wagons. Describe something as an SUV and
everyone has a pretty good idea what you're referring to, so what's
the big ****ing deal?
Get over it and stop being so ****ing precious about a language that
was born through bastardisation anyway!

How exactly?
The only difference to your average "soft roader" and your average sedan
based wagon is a bit of extra roof height and drive to an extra axle.
> Describe something as an SUV and everyone has a pretty good idea what

The "big deal" is that "SUV" is a pretty non descript wanky Americanism that
we just don't need.

Thanks for that, but I'm rather proud of our unique version of English and
can live quite happily without useless wankery being introduced.

My objection to the term is it isn't descriptive.
Its too broad a term that doesn't describe any vehicle.
What had we been calling them
> previously? Off-roaders? 4WD's?
4WD is the correct term for Landcruisers, Patrols and other similar
vehicles.
AWD wagon is a good description of smaller vehicles like XTrail and RAV4.
There are currently several 'SUV's' on

Name them.
Describe something as an SUV and
> everyone has a pretty good idea what you're referring to,
I disagree, I have no idea what an "SUV" is, if you have a proper
definition lets have it.
so what's
> the big ****ing deal?
> Get over it and stop being so ****ing precious about a language that

The main objection is its a non descriptive US term and I won't get over
it until ****wits stop using it.

Santa Fe FWD, Kluger FWD, Territory RWD. Probably a lot more to come
too.
